Quick update from my aunt's computer, since they have Internet here (however flaky). For whatever reason, I can get Wi-Fi on my iPod Touch at my grandmother's o_O I think I'm piggybacking on the karaoke bar next door.

First few days were set aside for meeting the relatives on my father's side of the family. Everyone congregates at my grandmother's for lunch and plans for the evening. A lot of shopping and eating out at restaurants. I had dumplings, Beijing duck, eel, various seafood, more duck...if I had to make an entire catalog of my food intake, it would fill up this entry. However, with all the hiking around the city, I'm sure my caloric balance is still intact. My stomach hasn't been very agreeable, though...I don't think it's the food here necessarily, since I wasn't feeling well before I left for China. Took a bit of medicine to calm my stomach. Should be alright. I really don't need diarrhea right now u_u given how little the bathrooms here have changed *gag* I don't know what Chinese people have against sit-down toilets...although, at least the five-star restaurant we ate at tonight provided soap and toilet paper, which is more than I can say for just about anywhere else, including the hotel we stayed at in Beijing >_<.

It's tourism season, so the city is CROWDED, especially the major attractions like Tiananmen Square. I was disappointed that they cordoned off all the areas, meaning you couldn't go inside any of the buildings, only peer at the rather dark interior from a few small entryways. When I last visited 10 years ago, it wasn't this bad, and indeed, my father tells me that when he was here as a child, you could walk around everywhere. Unfortunately, tourists abused these privileges, and now everyone pays. Ugh. Took a tour bus starting at 4:30 am (!!!) to several locations, including the Great Wall. I took some nice dress-up photos at the former, and my sister got on the camel for a picture XD same as I did a decade ago. Haha. Too bad we didn't have time to climb all the way to the top, since we'd taken a tour bus and were only given an hour and a half to explore. We stopped at a few other locations, including the Ming dynasty emperor's tomb, some sort of medical center (?), and a Tibetan cultural center. They were all tourist traps, each worse than the next. I gave up on following our Chinese tour guide's non-stop chattering (seriously, she sounds like an auctioneer) and just enjoyed the pretty sights, while ignoring the people trying to sell me shit as much as possible. Didn't entirely succeed, since we got duped on some medicine we really shouldn't have bought.

I'm rambling too long, sorry. The following day, we were going to visit the Heavenly Temple and the Summer Palace, but only made it through the former because we were so exhausted from climbing the Great Wall. I actually was very irritable that day and am a bit embarassed to admit that I nearly got into a fight with some guy there. It happened like this. Chinese tourists are rude in a passive aggressive sort of way. Specifically, they have no respect for people taking photos and will walk right past your camera without stopping. (This sort of extends to traffic as well, where pedestrians, bicyclists, and auto drivers engage in a suicidal Frogger match-up at every intersection. It's a miracle I haven't seen any accidents). Well, my dad was trying to take a photo of me in front of this circular structure, a place of worship back in the day. It's at the back of the temple, meaning a lot of people were crowded there. We stood there waiting for several minutes as we tried to snatch a photo in between the milling tourists, and just when my dad pushed the button, this guy walks right into the frame. I was already annoyed because this had happened many times before, and I guess this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. I yelled at the guy in Chinese to move to the side, but I was angry, so I couldn't come up with the right words halfway through. So I ended up reverting to English and giving him a push - no, not even a push, it was barely a tap, no worse than people squeezing past us all the time. Well, this guy apparently understood some English, so he snapped back at me, and it all spiraled downward from there...he kept saying I was Chinese too, I had no right to act arrogant because I spoke English, which was a funny thing to say since 1) I would expect him to act arrogant because I was speaking a foreign tongue, and 2) I had seen Chinese people act worse to each other (especially on the subway...oh my God, I didn't realize sardines in a can could be LITERAL until Beijing's rush hour). Anyway, whatever his reasoning, I was hot and tired and itching for a fight, so I cursed at him and he hurled insults at us and it was just bad until my dad stepped into defuse the situation, even though he was none too happy himself. After that, we decided it was time to leave Beijing and get some rest.

Now that you've heard the best and the worst, our next plan is to go to Chengdu and then to Xi'an with my aunt and cousin. But the next day is for sleeping. My thighs are still sore from all the walking around.

Got some comments recently with people asking to translate more, so here it is ^_____^
I skipped chapter 4 though because it fried my brain halfway through. It's about Shouri's adventures in Switzerland :D I promise I will finish it before chapter 6, but I need some help. Does anyone know what DTJ is and what does it have to do with Top Gun (the movie I suppose, KKM is really killing me with all its references to pop culture >_<)???
Anyway, if you read chapter 5 first you're not gonna spoil yourself, coz there are almost no direct references to the previous untranslated chapter in there. So don't be afraid.
One technical thing, there are words at the very end of this chapter spoken by a woman, using pronouns and particles women usually use. Since there is no way to indicate that in English, I am gonna use italics for her entire speech.

Okay, Luke wasn't always happy...but then we had just spent about 2 hours looking for an extra battery for our digital camera - which is apparently not sold at the Fred Meyer photo area, not at an Office Depot and once we gave in and decided to go to Best Buy, we got a little lost trying to find it. Well, a quick stop at a gas station to purchase a map of Seattle and a phone call to the store and we eventually got there and got the battery. We were tired and hungry and Nikko's was the next stop.

Good Greek food, one of Luke's favorite places from when he lived there, and our moods improved once the Gyros came.
